Outer ear infections are also termed otitis externa. They involve inflammation or infection of the ear canal. The ear canal extends from the eardrum to the outside.
Causes of Otitis Externa
Injury to the lining of the ear canal, usually from foreign objects, can lead to external ear infections. These infections are usually caused by bacteria or, less commonly, by fungus.
Signs and Symptoms of Otitis Externa
Otitis externa produces pain in the ear, which can be very severe. Movement of the earlobe, such as tugging on it, causes marked increase in the pain. Frequently there is itching in the ear and drainage from the ear may occur. Due to swelling of the ear canal, there may be impaired hearing in the infected ear. A painful lump or boil may develop within the ear canal. The infections can be spread through contact to the opposite ear.
