Causes of Down Syndrome
Down's syndrome is a genetic disorder due to an extra chromosome in the fertilized egg. This creates abnormalities as the fetus develops. The extra chromosome comes from the father, in 1/3 of the cases.
Signs and Symptoms of Down Syndrome
Symptoms of Down's syndrome are seen shortly after birth. They include lack of normal muscle tone, floppy head and face abnormalities, small or odd-shaped skull, slanting, almond-shaped eyes, small mouth and protruding tongue, broad hands with large, unusual palm creases, little finger curves inward (sometimes), heart murmur. There is delayed growth and development and the child never reaches full stature. Various degrees of mental retardation occurs.
