Acute diarrhea is a very common disorder, affecting the average adult at least twice a year. Acute diarrhea is defined as being present for less than three weeks. Chronic forms of diarrhea have been present for greater than three weeks. Acute diarrhea produces the passage of many loose, watery or unformed bowel movements. It is common among all age groups.

Acute diarrhea is usually caused by infections. These include virus infections and bacterial infections. Food poisoning can be a source of acute diarrhea, In this case, a substance or toxin is given off by a bacteria that is present in the food and leads to acute diarrhea. Fecal impaction can lead to acute diarrhea. Many drugs, including alcohol, antacids, laxatives, theophylline colchicine and some antibiotics can lead to acute diarrhea.

Acute diarrhea produces cramping abdominal pain, loose, watery or unformed bowel movements. Sometimes, there is fecal incontinence, or the lack of bowel control. Occasionally, fever and even chills may occur.
