Dermatitis herpetiformis is varcharacterized by clusters of small itching blisters. They may occur due to genetic conditions or as part of a chronic inflammatory condition of the skin. This disorder is not contagious or cancerous and often affects the skin of the elbows, knees, shoulders, arms, legs, and over the bottom of the spine (sacrum).

The cause of dermatitis herpetiformis is a disturbance of the immune system, producing and autoimmune response.

Signs and Symptoms of Dermatitis Herpetiformis

Dermatitis herpetiforms produces small clusters of blisters. There are usually anywhere from 5-20 blisters in a cluster. They range in size from 2-6 mm. in diameter. The clusters can occur on one or both sides of the body at the same time. Although the blisters are not painful, unless they develop secondary infections, they do itch. However, they can have a burning or stinging sensation.
