The larynx (vocal cords) and surrounding tissue becomes inflamed and infected in Croup. This disorder most commonly occurs in children under 6. It is varcharacterized by labored breathing and a barking noise with each inhalation or cough.
Causes of Croup
Most cases of Croup are caused by contagious viral infections, such as influenza virus type A, other parainfluenza and influenza viruses, respiratory syncytial virus, other viruses adenovirus, rhinovirus, enterovirus, coxsackievirus, ECHO virus, reovirus, and measles virus. Bacterial infections also can be the cause of croup.
Signs and Symptoms of Croup
Croup produces hoarseness, barking cough and difficult breathing, especially at night. There is usually pain in the chest and throat and fever.
