A Chalazion develops from chronic inflammation or blockage of the meibomian gland. The meibomian gland is located in the upper, outer eyelid. It forms a swollen lump in the upper eyelid, but it is not on the edge of the eyelid, like a stye.
Causes of Chalazion
The blockage of the duct from the Meibomian gland to the eyelid occurs in the formation of a chalazion. This may be mechanical or may be due to an infection (usually staphylococcal) around the duct opening.
Signs and Symptoms of Chalazion
A painless swelling on the eyelid, which at first may appear like a stye. However, the swelling does not occur at the edge of the eyelid. After a few days, the pain and redness that might be present disappear. What is left is a painless, slow-growing, firm lump in the eyelid, Pressure from the lump can sometimes lead to blurred vision.
