Bunion

Overview of Bunion

overview

Bunions occur three times more likely in women as men. This disorder is varcharacterized by a bony protrusion forming on the outside edge of the joint at the base of the big toe.

Causes of Bunion

causes

The big toe's scientific name is hallux. The big toe has grown or been forced into a position where it overlaps one or more of the other toes, called hallux valgus. This is usually the consequence of wearing shoes that deform the foot and toes.

Signs and Symptoms of Bunion

signs and symptoms

Bunions produce an inward-turned first toe. The great toe may overlap the second toe or even the third toe. Frequently, there is thickening of the skin over the bony protrusion which produces a callus. Fluid may accumulate underneath the thickened skin and frequently there is pain, tenderness and stiffness in that part of the foot.
