A boil is a bacterial infection that usually begins in a hair follicle. Boils are painful and quite common. They can occur anywhere on the skin and are contagious and may spread. Most often they appear on the neck, face, buttocks, and breasts. When the infection spreads through small tunnels underneath the skin forming clusters of boils, they are called carbuncles.

Boils develop when bacteria infect the hair follicle and bores into the skin’s deeper layers. The most common microorganism to be involved is staphylococcus aureus.

Signs and Symptoms of Boils

Boils appear suddenly and ripen with 24 hours. They are red with a domed nodule containing pus on the surface. Boils are approximately 1-1/2 cm to 3 cm in diameter. They are red, tender and painful. They may also develop in a lymph gland of the groin, armpit and neck.
