Blastomycosis is an infectious, fungus disease that begins in the lung and sometimes spreads through the bloodstream to other body parts, especially the skin. Blastomycosis is transmitted through bites from infected dogs, but cannot be passed from person to person. This infection can involve the lungs, mouth, skin and tissue below the skin, prostate, and epididymis. It is more common in states bordering the Mississippi and Ohio rivers.

Blastomycosis is a fungus, Blastomyces dermatitidis, found in wood and soil. Skin lesions occur most commonly in gardeners, farmers, or some association with beaver huts, but the natural source of this fungus is unknown.

Signs and Symptoms of Blastomycosis

Symptoms may begin slowly or rapidly and include: cough, either dry and non-productive or with sputum, chest pain, chills, fever and drenching sweats, shortness of breath, fatigue, loss of appetite. If the skin is involved, there may be lesions or abscesses.
