Polymyalgia rheumatica produces pain and stiffness in the muscles of the shoulders and hips. This is a rare condition, that occurs more commonly in older women. It may occur in association with temporal arteritis.
Temporal arteritis produces inflammation of the large arteries, especially those in the head and neck. It primarily affects the temporal arteries, although those supplying the brain may be affected. It also occurs more commonly in older women. It may occur in association with Polymyalgia rheumatica.
Causes of Temporal Arteritis
It is thought that both of these disorders arise from an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks and destroys its own tissues. The underlying cause is unknown.
Signs and Symptoms of Temporal Arteritis
The symptoms associated with polymyalgia rheumatica usually develop over several weeks. At time, however, the course may be much more rapid. The muscles feel still and painful. Generalized aches and pain occur, especially in the morning. Mild fever and night sweats may occur. Weight loss, loss of appetite and depression may be seen.
If temporal arteritis accompanies the symptoms of polymyalgia rheumatica, then severe headaches are usually present. These may be unilateral or occur on both sides of the head. The headaches are frequently localized to the temple. Chewing may increase the pain. There may be redness, swelling and tenderness over very prominent temporal arteries. Occasionally, visual problems or visual loss can occur.
