Facial Nerve Neuroma

Overview of Facial Nerve Neuroma

overview

There are a number of nerves that originate from the brainstem. They generally supply the structures of the head and neck. The facial nerve arises in proximity to the acoustic and vestibular nerves. They travel together until they reach the internal auditory canal. The facial nerve diverges away from the nerve for hearing and balance at that point.
Benign tumors may originate from the nerve, usually near its origin at the brainstem. When the facial nerve is involved, it frequently affects not only movements of the face, but also hearing and balance. These tumors may enlarge to the point where they obstruct the circulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain or compress the brainstem, itself.

Signs and Symptoms of Facial Nerve Neuroma

signs and symptoms

Facial nerve neuromas may produce weakness or spasms of the muscles on one side of the face. This can lead to difficulty closing the involved eyelid as well as drooling from that side of the mouth.
When the adjacent cranial nerves are affected, individuals may experience loss of hearing, ringing in the ears, dizzyness and vertigo. Large tumors may produce coordination problems, nausea and vomiting.
