Posterior Nosebleeds

Overview of Posterior Nosebleeds

overview

Unlike anterior nosebleeds, posterior nosebleeds may be life threatening. They are more difficult to control, because direct access or direct pressure cannot be obtained. They are often signs of more serious underlying medical disorders.

Causes of Posterior Nosebleeds

causes

Posterior nosebleeds frequently are the end result of disease that damage the blood vessels. These include atherosclerosis, diabetes and hypertension. They can also be symptoms of tumors or arteriovenous malformations of this region.

Signs and Symptoms of Posterior Nosebleeds

signs and symptoms

Posterior nosebleeds can result in copious bleeding. Blood may be swallowing, leading to nausea and vomiting. When blood loss is severe, decreased blood pressure may occur. This can lead to dizziness, lightheadedness and at times death. Rapid heart rate and shortness of breath may occur as the anemia worsens.
