Atrial Fibrillation means a quivering of heart-muscle fibers manifested in an irregular heartbeat. Rapid impulses generated in the right atrium (also called auricle) occur. They are irregularly transported through the conducting system of the heart to the ventricles. If the heart rate is too fast, the ventricle may not function properly. The hallmark of this disorder is an irregularly irregular heart beat.

Causes of Atrial fibrillation include: rheumatic heart disease caused by rheumatic fever, atherosclerosis of coronary arteries, with or without a previous heart attack, hyperthyroidism, and congestive heart failure.

Signs and Symptoms of Atrial Fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation may not produce any clinical symptoms. The most frequent symptom is the awareness of an every changing irregular heart beat. No two beats are of equal strength of timing. There may be weakness, dizziness and faintness. Exercise intolerance may occur.
