Leprosy is also known as Hansen's disease. It is a chronic infectious disease, that primarily affects the nerves and the skin. In particular, the hands the face are affected, where numbness and disfigurement may occur. Rarely, does the disease affect individuals in developed parts of the world. It is most commonly found in South America, Africa and parts of Asia. The disease is not easily transmitted from one person to another.
Causes of Leprosy
Leprosy is caused by infection with the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae. It is thought to transmitted through airborne droplets or by direct contact with infected areas in other people.
Signs and Symptoms of Leprosy
Leprosy develops very slowly. Usually, no symptoms are present for several years. At that point, numbness of the hands, feet and face may occur. Gradually, the skin over the affected areas becomes thicker and deformed. Coloration may change.
