The pain may recur over short periods of time. This syndrome may represent a form of Proctalgia fugax, which is a fairly common disorder.

Recurrent episodes of rectal spasm and pain occur. They typically last 15-30 seconds. Recurrent attacks may occur over 15-30 minutes. It is associated with considerable flatus or rectal gas.
