Marchiafava Bignami disease is also referred to as primary degeneration of the Corpus Callosum. It is seen almost exclusively in heavy, chronic users of alcohol. It occurs primarily in men. Generally, it affects people in middle and late adult life.

No specific etiology for the disorder has been established. Either a direct toxic effect of alcohol or a vitamin deficiency has been suggested.

Signs and Symptoms of Marchiafava-bignami Disease

The symptoms primarily occur in male, chronic alcoholics. They include tremors, seizures, hallucinations and Delerium tremens, DT's. As the disease progresses people develop emotional disorders often varcharacterized by violent sexual perversions. They develop unsteady gait and may become increasingly demented to the point of coma.
