Skin Breakdown From Excessive Moisture

Overview of Skin Breakdown From Excessive Moisture

overview

Any region of the body can be affected by excessive moisture. However, those areas that have a thicker covering of dead cells, such as occurs on the hands and the feet, are more prone to be involved. Under normal conditions, these thickened areas of skin serve to protect the underlying layers of skin, bone and muscle. Forces which would normally damage the skin are easily tolerated. Chronic exposure to moisture, however, leads to maceration of these layers of dead tissues. The tissues become friable and may become disrupted. The underlying layers of tissues may become irritated or damaged. Secondary infections may develop within these layers of dead tissue, either from bacterial or fungal organisms.

Causes of Skin Breakdown From Excessive Moisture

causes

Excessive moisture can occur under many conditions. It usually produces symptoms when it is continuous for many hours or days. The underlying conditions may be perfect for the development of fungal or bacterial infections.

Signs and Symptoms of Skin Breakdown From Excessive Moisture

signs and symptoms

In areas that have thickened outer coverings of skin, the tissue will become macerated. It usually appears lighter in color than the surround skin, and may become friable and peal away. Secondary infections can lead to red, painful and swollen areas. A discharge may develop from these infected areas. The underlying living skin may be irritated and become painful or red.
