Overview of Focal Nodular Hyperplasia Of The Liver
Focal nodular hyperplasia produces a benign tumor of the liver. It occurs more frequently in women. The abnormality is frequently asymptomatic, identified only on incidental imaging studies. The incidence of complications, such as hemorrhage and necrosis or death of a portion of the tumor mass, is rare.
Causes of Focal Nodular Hyperplasia Of The Liver
The cause of this disorder is unknown. Since the disorder is more common in women, there has been a suggestion that it is in part hormonally stimulated. Oral contraceptives do not seem to be implicated, however.
Signs and Symptoms of Focal Nodular Hyperplasia Of The Liver
The tumor found in focal nodular hyperplasia may be asymptomatic. It may produce a mass or lump in the right upper abdomen. There may be pain in the same area, particularly in the mass becomes large enough or if there is hemorrhage into the mass, suddenly enlarging it.
