There are three types of red cell membrane disorders that are inherited. One of these is hereditary spherocytosis. The condition is varcharacterized by red cells which lose their typical disc-like shape and appear spherical. This alteration in shape results from the loss of a portion of the cell membrane. This disorder may not produce symptoms until adult life.

This is usually an inherited disorder that affects a protein that helps build the skeleton of the red cell wall. Part of the lipid bilayer of the cell membrane is lost producing an alteration in the shape of the cell.

Signs and Symptoms of Hereditary Spherocytosis

The major symptoms are related to anemia. Pallor, fatigue, rapid heart rate, and poor exercise tolerance occurs. There may be jaundice - yellowing of the skin and eyes. Often there is a history of gallstones.
