At least half of the population that reaches 65 years of age will suffer from troublesome itching of the skin. This disorder may also occur with post-menopausal women. A search for underlying diseases that can produce chronic itching should be done. Common diseases to exclude include cholestasis, drug reactions and renal insufficiency. The majority of people in this age group, however, will not have a definable cause of their itching.

Causes of Senile Pruritis

Senile pruritis is thought to be caused by senescent or aging skin. As the akin ages, it contains less water the youthful skin. This, combined with exposure to cold temperatures and dry climates leads to fine cracking and scaling of the skin. This causes the itching which is associated with this disorder.

Signs and Symptoms of Senile Pruritis

Senile pruritis leads to generalized itching. It may be quite severe and may be quite constant. Exposure to cold, dry climates may aggravate this disorder.
