Chiggers are the larvae of certain mites. These insects live most commonly in the vegetation of the tropics and subtropics. The larvae penetrates the skin. Chiggers may spread typhus.

Chiggers is caused by infestation with larvae of certain mites.

Signs and Symptoms of Chiggers

Pain and itching tend to occur at the site where the larvae penetrates the skin. A small lesion develops which appears hemorrhagic. Itching and burning pain may last for months. A rash may develop in the area or more diffusely. The infestation occurs most commonly at the ankles.
