anorexia nervosa is a psychological illness that usually begins when a person begins a weight-loss diet. The condition continues even after the person has attained reasonable weight loss and insists on eating very little in spite of hunger and an emaciated appearance. They have a distorted body image and feel fat even when emaciated.

Causes of Anorexia Nervosa

The exact cause of Anorexia nervosa is not known. It is thought to be precipitated or aggravated by family and social conflicts. The preoccupation of society with slimness has caused increased phobias about putting on weight. It could also be a symptom of depression or personality disorder.

Signs and Symptoms of Anorexia Nervosa

Symptoms of Anorexia nervosa include a loss of at least 15% of body weight. There is an unreasonable fear of obesity and depression. A distorted body image is present. Loss of appetite, constipation and intolerance for the cold develop. The need to exercise to prevent weight gain may become obsessive. Women develop irregular or absent menstrual periods.
