Infection with Ehrlishoses organisms can produce a life threatening disease. One form of the disease is seen mostly in the Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic states, Europe, and Africa. Another form is seen in regions similar in distribution to Lyme disease. The disease is spread through tick bites.

Causes of Ehrlichioses

Ehrlichoses is caused by infection with one of the strains of Ehrlichia. It is spread through bites of infected ticks.

Signs and Symptoms of Ehrlichioses

Tick bites are the fist noticeable symptom. They are followed by non-specific symptoms that include fever, chills, and headaches. Loss of appetite along with nausea and vomiting occurs. Cough, sore throat, abdominal pain and muscle pain also may occur. The disease may last a number of weeks.
