A psuedoaneurysm or false aneurysm is not an aneurysm at all. Rather, it represents a localized fibrous containment of the arterial contents after the arterial wall has been disrupted. The pseudoaneurysm does not contain any of the walls of the parent artery. When these conditions exist for a prolonged period of time, the surrounding connective tissue may mature are have some resemblance to the arterial wall.
Causes of Pseudoaneurysm
Penetrating trauma is a leading cause of pseudoaneurysm. Arterial punctures for various procedures can produce this disorder. Surgical treatments, especially vascular surgery, can lead to this condition. Invasion of the blood vessel by cancer, Marfan's syndrome, Fibromuscular dysplasia and vasculitis can all lead to disruption of the arterial wall with the development of pseuoaneurysms, Historically, it appears the these disorders commonly occurred after bloodletting, a practice that spanned over 2000 years of history.
Signs and Symptoms of Pseudoaneurysm
Symptoms of a pseudoaneurysm are primarily that of a pulsatile mass. They can occur over any artery, but are most common in the groin. Sometimes, there is localized pain. If nerves adjacent to the expanding arterial mass are compressed, it can lead to tingling and numbness below the level of the false aneurysm. These masses can gradually or abruptly increase in size.
