Onycholysis describes the condition where a damaged nail is lifted away from the underlying nail bed. The nail may eventually fall off. Certain other medical disorders, such as psoriasis and lichen planus, can lead to nail separation. Nail separation can be associated with secondary infection in the nail bed.

Signs and Symptoms of Onycholysis

The nail is gradually lifted off of the nail bed. As this occurs, the attachment to the nail bed diminishes. Eventually, the nail may become lose and fall off. In psoriasis, the nail may also be lifted. However, there is often debris underneath the nail.
