A hydrocele represents an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the testicle. It occurs in the double layered membrane that surrounds the testicle. The condition is most common in infant boys and elderly men. Attempts at removing the fluid with a needle can cause bleeding. This results in the development of a hematocele.

The majority of cases of hydrocele have no cause. Others have been seen in association with infection, inflammation, and trauma.

Signs and Symptoms of Hydrocele

Hydroceles typically are painless. They produce swelling of the testicle and scrotum usually on one side. People afflicted with this disorder frequently complain of a heavy sensation in the scrotum.
