The term dermatitis is used synonymously with eczema. Both terms describe a inflammatory disorder of the skin. There are many causes for these disorders. They include seborrheic dermatitis, stasis dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, neurodermatitis, prickly heat rash and contact dermatitis. There is also a disorder referred to as over treatment dermatitis. None of these disorders are life threatening. They often will wax and wane in their course, sometimes disappearing entirely.
Causes of Dermatitis
Contact dermatitis is caused by irritation from some substance that has come into contact with the skin. The cause for neurodermatitis is unknown. Stress or anxiety is a risk factor. Atopic dermatitis may represent some form of allergic response. Stasis dermatitis results from inadequate venous drainage of the legs. The cause of seborrheic dermatitis is unknown. Over treatment dermatitis results from skin that has been vigorously treated and injured for another skin disorder.
Signs and Symptoms of Dermatitis
Contact dermatitis produces red, itching areas. Blistering of the skin may develop. The changes are limited to regions of contact with an offending agent. Neurodermatitis causes itching which is at times severe. It is worsened by anxiety. Skin changes occur from frequent itching and disappear if it can be controlled. Atopic dermatitis produces itchy, thickened areas of skin. It frequently begins in childhood and tends to run in families. It is common to have allergies. The symptoms usually improve after adolescence. The skin may be fissured cracked. It is most commonly seen in the front of the elbow and back of the knee. Stasis dermatitis results from vascular disease, mostly affecting the veins. There is edema of the legs. The skin above the ankles on the inside is mostly affected. It appears thickened and itches. Prominent veins may be noted. Seborrheic dermatitis produces scaling and greasy appearing skin. It occurs on the nose, between the eyebrows and behind the ears. Their is dandruff which is difficult to control. Over treatment dermatitis occurs when the skin has been subject to harsh dermatological treatments. it becomes red and sensitive.
