Von Willebrand's disease is the most common inherited bleeding disorder. It occurs in one out of every thousand people. Most forms of the disorder are inherited. The disease results in excessive bleeding. It occurs because of decreased levels of Von Willebran's factor or from abnormal Von Willebrand's factor.

Causes of Von Willebrand's Disease

Von Willebrand's disease occurs from a mutation that leads to either decreased amounts of Von Willebrand's factor or dysfunctional Von Willebrand's factor. It may also be caused by an autoimmune disorder that is directed against Von Willebrand's factor.

Signs and Symptoms of Von Willebrand's Disease

The most common symptom associated with Von Willebrand's disease is excessive bleeding following trauma or surgery. They result in nose bleeds, spontaneous gastrointestinal bleeding and genitourinary tract bleeding.
