Nasal Abscess

Overview of Nasal Abscess

overview

Abscess of the nasal septum is usually traumatic. A hematoma is formed underneath the mucosal lining of the nose. It becomes secondarily infected. Marked swelling and pain occur. Destruction of cartilage and bone as well as infection of the bone, osteomyelitis, may occur. It the infections spread through the veins, the cavernous sinus surrounding the base of the brain may be affected.

Causes of Nasal Abscess

causes

Secondary infection of a nasal hematoma is the most common cause. Nasal surgery, a pimple in the opening of the nose and dental disease can lead to nasal abscesses.

Signs and Symptoms of Nasal Abscess

signs and symptoms

There is marked swelling and redness of the nasal septum, that area that divides the nasal cavity. It is soft and tender. Rupture of this area leads to drainage of pus. Delay in diagnosis can lead to deformity of the nose as the cartilage is damaged or destroyed. Orbital cellulitis can occur with swelling and redness around the eyes. If the cavernous sinus becomes infected or thrombosed it can lead to a red, bulging eye and double vision.
