Anal ulcers are usually deep defects in the surface of the tissue at the entrance to the rectum. They often appear red, with thickened edges. They are often painful and may bleed. Painful bowel movements are common. Spontaneous rectal pain may occur from spasms of the anal sphincter muscle.
