Asymptomatic hematuria may result from a benign disorder of the kidney called Berger's disease. It is also referred to as thin basement membrane disease. It is a common cause of kidney disease. It is more common in Southern Europe and Asia. Like all forms of hematuria, it is necessary to exclude malignancies of the genitourinary tract as the cause.

Causes of Berger's Disease

Most cases of Berger's disease are idiopathic; they have no known cause. They are found to occur in association with other diseases where antibodies are deposited in the kidney.

Signs and Symptoms of Berger's Disease

Gross hematuria, or blood in the urine are the main symptoms of Berger's disease. It occurs commonly 24-48 hours following throat or upper gastrointestinal infection.
