Osteosarcoma accounts for almost half of all sarcomas of the bone. These are cancers that occur from the bones and linings of the bone. Over 60% of osteosarcomas occur before the end of the second decade of life. These tumors most commonly arise in the upper arm and upper and lower leg. They are somewhat more common in males.

The cause of osteosarcoma is unknown. Radiation therapy or pre-existing benign conditions that affect that bone, such as Paget's disease, are predisposing risk factors.

Signs and Symptoms of Osteosarcoma

The symptoms of osteosarcoma are primarily pain and swelling in the area of the bone that is involved. Unexplained fractures can sometimes occur.
