Iron deficiency anemia results in an inadequate number of red cells or inadequate amounts of hemoglobin with the red cells. This disorder is most commonly associated with excessive blood loss and with inadequate stores of iron.
Causes of Anemia, Iron-deficiency
The cause of iron deficiency anemia is a decreased absorption of iron or increased necessity for iron. In adolescents anemia can be the result of growth spurts, In adults, however, is usually the result of blood loss. Conditions that might produce this include heavy menstrual bleeding, pregnancy, malabsorption, gastrointestinal disease with bleeding and cancer.
Signs and Symptoms of Anemia, Iron-deficiency
There may be no symptoms at the beginning of onset. Symptoms of anemia are: tiredness, weakness, paleness, (especially in the hands and lining of the lower eyelids). Other less common symptoms are: tongue inflammation, fainting, breathlessness, rapid heartbeat, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, cravings for ice, paint or dirt, and susceptibility to infection.
