Nasal fractures are often seen in association with facial fractures. They lead to local deformity and swelling. The airway may be obstructed either acutely or on a chronic basis. Occasionally, nasal fractures may lead to fracture of the skull base, Cerebrospinal fluid leaks can then occur.

Nasal fractures and associated injuries are almost exclusively the result of trauma.

Signs and Symptoms of Nasal Fracture

Nasal fractures are usually associated with nasal bleeding. There is pain and local tenderness. The nose may appear edematous and deformed. There often is swelling and bruising about the eyes. Fractures of the orbits, particularly the bottom of the orbit, may lead to double vision or blurred vision. Unstable fractures of the face may be associated with nasal fractures in Le Fort fractures. Obstruction of breathing occurs when the nasal septum is deviated or has a hematoma in it.
