The endometrium is the lining of the uterus. It may become infected by itself, or in conjunction with infections of the fallopian tubes and ovaries. The presence of an I.U.D. increases the risk of endometritis. Removal of an I.U.D. may be necessary to control and endometrial infection.

Causes of Endometrial Infection

Infections of the endometrium may occur from sexually transmitted diseases. It may occur in conjunction with pelvic inflammatory disease, where the fallopian tubes and ovaries are involved. It may also occur after surgical trauma from D and C or after pregnancy.

Signs and Symptoms of Endometrial Infection

Endometritis produces midline lower abdominal pain. Fever and chills may be present. There may be an abnormal vaginal discharge. Bleeding after sexual intercourse may occur. There is often difficulty getting pregnant.
