This disorder often is the result of improper use of the voice. Enotracheal intubation, where a tube is temporarily placed into the lungs during anesthesia, can also lead to contact ulceration of the vocal cords. Frequent regurgitation of stomach contents may directly irritate the vocal cords, leading to the development of a contact ulcer.

Signs and Symptoms of Ulcer Of The Vocal Cord

The symptoms associated with contact ulcers of the vocal cords include pain when speaking or swallowing. There are also varying degrees of hoarseness. There may be a history of chronic regurgitation of gastric contents or excessive use of the voice.
