There are 26 bones that constitute the skeleton of the foot. Most fractures that occur in the foot require only immobilization in a cast. When the bones are severely displaced, however, surgical intervention is frequently required.

Causes of Foot Fracture

Foot fractures are the result of trauma. Stress fractures, where there is a non-displaced fracture without a specific injury, can occur from repeated foot trauma. This can be seen in athletes and in the military.

Signs and Symptoms of Foot Fracture

Foot fractures produce pain and swelling of the foot over the area of fracture. Injuries to the nerves can produce numbness or tingling in the foot. Motion is limited and pain frequently occurs when weight bearing activities are done.
