The nabothian glands occur on the cervix of the uterus. At times, these glands may become obstructed, leading to accumulation of fluid. They may also become secondarily infected, leading to a nabothian gland abscess.

Causes of Nabothian Gland Cyst -abscess

Nabothian cysts are caused when these glands becomes obstructed. This occurs when new tissue grows over the opening of the gland after childbirth. It is also seen in elderly women when the thinning tissue of the cervix traps these secretions. Secondary infection of a cyst results in the development of an abscess.

Signs and Symptoms of Nabothian Gland Cyst -abscess

Nabothian cysts are frequently asymptomatic. There are found usually during pelvic examination. If they become large enough, they may produce pain. If an infection develops, pain usually increases. Lower abdominal pain and painful sexual intercourse may then occur.
