Spinal tuberculosis often involves two or more adjacent vertebral bodies. It is referred to as Pott's disease. In children, the upper thoracic area is most involved. In adults, the thoracolumar junction is the most commonly affected area. Destruction of the spine produces the typical kyphotic deformity, where the spine is angulated forward. The pus may track along the spine or over the psoas muscle. Spreading along the psoas muscle may produce symptoms in the groin.

Pott's disease is caused by tuberculosis of the spine.

Signs and Symptoms of Pott's Disease

Pott's disease or tuberculosis of the spine is associated with back pain, fever, chills and night sweats. Varying degrees of weakness or numbness may occur in the legs or around the genitals and rectum. There is often loss of weight and loss of appetite. Chronic diseases that lower immunity such as HIV or cancer may be risk factors.
