Damage of the anterior portion of the pituitary gland can occur following pregnancy and delivery. This damage is caused by a stroke or infarction of the pituitary. This most commonly occurs following severe hemorrhage or hypotension. the pituitary gland in pregnancy is enlarged and vulnerable to blood loss.

Causes of Sheehan's Syndrome

Sheehan's syndrome is caused by vasospasm of the blood vessels supplying the anterior portion of the pituitary gland. It is usually related to severe blood loss following delivery.

Signs and Symptoms of Sheehan's Syndrome

One of the earliest symptoms is the inability to lactate, or produce breast milk. Other symptoms of pituitary dysfunction can occur weeks or months later.
