Reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) or Complex regional pain syndrome 1, usually develops after an injury to the tissues. there is the onset of spontaneous pain. In addition, there is an exaggerated pain response in the affected area. The area which is affected may gradually increase over time.

Although some type of autonomic nervous system dysfunction has been implicated, the exact cause of the disease in unknown.

Signs and Symptoms of Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy

Aside from pain in the affected area, local changes occur in the tissues. Swelling, changes in skin color and texture and alterations in the temperature of the skin occurs. Burning pain is common and typically occurs spontaneously. The involved area is often warm, edematous and has increased sweating and increased hair growth. The skin in the involved area may appear skinny and contracted with atrophy of the subcutaneous tissue directly underneath the skin.
