At the completion of fetal development, contractions of the uterus begin. Pain is felt in the low back and abdomen, along the outline of the uterus. The pain typically lasts 30-90 seconds and gradually increases in frequency.

Normal contraction of the uterus initiated by hormonal releases from the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. The process causes the fetus to be forced through the birth canal.

Signs and Symptoms of Pregnancy - Labor

Low back and abdominal pain begin with contractions lasting 30-90 seconds. Initially, the contractions recur every fifteen minutes or so. As the process progresses, the pain eventually reoccurs as frequently as every minute or two. Rupture of the membranes, with blood tinged drainage of fluid from the vagina, occurs shortly before or after the onset of true labor.
