An anal fistula represents a small tube or tract leading from the anal canal to the skin around the anal opening. A watery pus like substance drains through this opening irritating the surrounding skin.

Causes of Anal Fistula

The cause of anal fistulas may be due to the erosion of the tissue because of a spreading abscess. An extension from an infection causing a tear in the canal lining may also be a cause. Other causes are trauma, rectal infections such as chlamydia, carcinoma, and radiation therapy.

Signs and Symptoms of Anal Fistula

Painful bowel movements often occur along with a constant or periodic discharge. The area is tender and firm to the touch with the skin being discolored around the fistula.
