Problems with hypotension or hypertension can also affect the function of the cells of the brain. Often, medications used for sedation or pain control, can lead to severe confusion.

Confusion from medical illness leads to agitation and combative behavior. The person may not know where they are, nor do they understand why they are in the hospital or nursing home. There may be temporary problems with recognition of friends or family members. The confusion may be associated with lethargy or stupor, if the underlying disease is producing these symptoms.
