The common peroneal nerve passes on the outside of the leg, just below the knee joint. It passes down the leg, supplying the muscles of the foot and toes and sensation of the top of the foot and lower leg. Injury or disease of this nerve may lead to weakness or numbness in these areas.

Causes of Peroneal Nerve Palsy

Injury, compression, tumors or fractures can damage the peroneal nerve. It is quite sensitive where it passes around the head of the fibula. It may also be damaged by diabetic neuropathy.

Signs and Symptoms of Peroneal Nerve Palsy

The symptoms associated with peroneal nerve palsy include partial or complete foot drop. There is difficulty controlling the ankle. Numbness or tingling of the top of the foot and the outside of the leg occurs.
