Diabetic amyotrophy is probably a variation of diabetic neuropathy. It is associated with severe weakness and atrophy of the large muscles of the pelvis and upper leg. It is a complication of Diabetes.

The exact cause is unknown. It is suggested that sorbitol, a sugar formed in Diabetic conditions, may act as a neuro toxin.

Signs and Symptoms of Diabetic Amyotrophy

The symptoms associated with Diabetic amyotrophy are marked weakness of the pelvis and upper leg. Standing up, sitting down, and going up and down stairs may be difficult. Walking may be unbalanced. The involved muscles undergo quite severe atrophy. There is weight loss and loss of appetite.
