The ulnar nerve passes along the inside of the elbow. Subsequently, it passes into the forearm, beneath the muscles that flex the wrist. The nerve ma be injured or compressed in either of these locations. It may also be injured just above the elbow where it comes in close contact with the intermuscular septum, that divides and anterior and posterior muscles of the upper arm. The result of injury in any of these locations can be weakness, pain, numbness and deformity of the hand.

Causes of Ulnar Neuropathy

Ulnar neuropathy of the elbow is caused by direct injury or compression of the nerve. It occurs most commonly in the locations cited above.

Signs and Symptoms of Ulnar Neuropathy

Numbness of the little finger and the outer half of the ring finger occurs. There may be atrophy of the muscles of the hand with the development of a varcharacteristic claw hand deformity if the nerve is injured bad enough. Pain is often felt in the elbow or the region just above or below it. Forceful movements of the flexor muscles of the wrist may aggravate the symptoms.
