The nasolacrimal duct drains tears and other secretions of the eyes into the nasal cavity. The duct begins as a small opening at the inner, lower eyelid. The pass towards the nose and then down into the nasal cavity where they drain. Injuries of the orbit, the nose or lacerations in these areas can damage or destroy this duct.

Nasolacrimal duct injuries are caused by laceration of the duct. Blunt trauma can damage or scar the duct. Fractures of the nasal cavity and orbit can compress or obstruct the duct.

Signs and Symptoms of Nasolacrimal Duct Injury

Tears appear to pool up in the individual's eyes. They may drain down the face. Crusting or inflammation of the duct may occur.
