The major joints of the body are lined by cartilage and have a small amount of clear fluid within them. Bleeding into the joint may occur from a variety of conditions. It is often necessary to aspirate, or remove, the blood from the joint to relieve the symptoms. Repeated bleeding into the joint can lead to fibrosis and arthritis.

Trauma is a leading cause of hemearthrosis. Injuries to the cartilage or bone can lead to bleeding within the joint. Coagulation disorders, particularly hemophilia, frequently can lead to repeated episodes of joint bleeding.

Signs and Symptoms of Hemarthrosis

Pain and swelling of a joint are the hallmarks or hemearthrosis. Due to these conditions, there is restricted motion of the joint and pain may occur with movement.
