Rotator Cuff Tear

Overview of Rotator Cuff Tear

overview

The roof of the shoulder joint is formed by four muscles and tendons. These muscles make it possible to lift and rotate the arm. When a portion of the rotator cuff is torn, mobility of the arm is limited and movement usually is associated with pain. Deformity of the shoulder joint may be apparent.

Causes of Rotator Cuff Tear

causes

Repeated sporting activities or heavy labor are the common causes of rotator cuff tears. Also, trauma to the shoulder, which can occur when falling on an outstretched arm or lifting a heavy object, can tear the rotator cuff muscles or tendons.

Signs and Symptoms of Rotator Cuff Tear

signs and symptoms

The typical symptoms that occur include pain, particularly when the movement requires use of the damage or torn muscle or tendon. Tenderness in the shoulder joint, particularly at night is seen. Weakness in the shoulder as well as limitation of the ability to raise the shoulder may occur. Severe disruptions of the rotator cuff mechanism can lead to deformity of the shoulder.
